Ten days of podcasts: an audio accompaniment to pandemic lockdown in 2020
Spring 2020. Edinburgh is “in lockdown”. Scotland, the UK, most of the world, is “in lockdown”. Movement is restricted. When people walk out they cut into the middle of the road to avoid each other. When people walk out there aren’t many places for them to go but back home again. This is just one dimension of my experience of our collective response to a global crisis.
Spring 2020. My son is now a toddler. He hasn’t been to nursery for a few months. He hasn’t had physical contact with anyone but his parents since then. But he’s doing fine. We go for walks, and people walk in the middle of the road to avoid us. But that’s ok.
Spring 2020. My son doesn’t sleep through the night. He tends to wake a couple of times: somewhere around midnight, and again three or four hours later. When I go to see him we sit and share the calmness of the early hours.
Spring 2020: good conditions in which to get through a few podcasts, wouldn’t you say? Out on long walks, or awake through the early hours, there’s time to kill.
I spent 10 days tweeting out links to each podcast episode I listened to from Friday April 24 to Sunday May 3. Here, then, is what I listened to.
35 episodes in total
Nine about Apple (the company)
Three about digital technology more generally
Two about parenting
Two about Watford Football Club
11 on politics, of one form or another
14 from the BBC
30 hours of content (approximately)
I’m going to spend some time and a few posts using these 35 episodes to reflect on what I listen to in a typical 10 day stretch. Listening to podcasts helps to keep me sane and in touch with the world, so I’m entrusting my peace of mind to these hours of audio companionship.
#JustListened @99piorg episode introducing a new podcast on Esoteric Political History. Timely as we regularly hear about past pndemics, USA elections and more. More good work from @romanmars and co. https://t.co/q33m6zuek0

— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 24, 2020
#JustListened Cortex, episode 100. I like the sound of two friends reflecting on life. Their ways of working aren’t all planned, nor all accidental – not by a long chalk. I like to think that I think about what I like as much as they do. / @imyke https://t.co/hLeEcmsRTR
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 25, 2020
#JustListened Accidental Tech Podcast, episode 375. The first Apple based tech podcast I started listening to. Three nice guys, often talking about stuff I’m tangentially interested in, sometimes giving me a window into worlds within programming worlds. https://t.co/DiCkswl6ty
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 26, 2020
#JustListened BBC Radio 4: Seriously podcast. All about getting babies involved in arts and creativity from very young. Reminds me of my Parental Leave this time last year! https://t.co/OkmIVlRYfF
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 26, 2020
#JustListened From The Rookery End (@watfordpodcast). An imagined live commentary of the game we should be enjoying this weekend. A win for the Hornets! We might just stay up. https://t.co/fM9tW8ONTb
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 26, 2020
#JustListened Don’t Log Off, from @bbcworldservice. This is part four. The series talks to people around the world, and asks them to describe their experiences under COVID-19 lockdown conditions. It’s fascinating, and rewarding. https://t.co/U4ARaNaO87
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 26, 2020

— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 27, 2020
#JustListened What Trump Can Teach Us About Constitutional Law. It’s @romanmars again. It’s Trump. It’s funny. It’s deadly serious. https://t.co/BXJVONfEjG
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 27, 2020
#JustListened Mac Power Users... another one from https://t.co/b3Iwt25LWc. How nice to hear people talking about how they set up their home offices. https://t.co/kZcL0tn8N5
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 27, 2020
#JustListened 2:30 am with a toddler in the house is prime podcast listening time. This is AppStories, and an episode on small utility apps for iPad and iPhone. Undemanding and enough to keep me awake. https://t.co/pshaKfmMLa
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 28, 2020
#JustListened From the BBC’s “Seriously” podcast, a half hour documentary on the spread of misinformation during the pandemic response. Networks, good intentions, failing to stop and think. Not a great combination, but such is the modern world. https://t.co/FlPIC1rfR8
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 28, 2020
#JustListened A @guardiannews long read, asking what will change as a result of our global pandemic responses. From the personal to the collective. https://t.co/hgtzwOu31M
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 28, 2020
#JustListened The Digital Human. I struggle to keep up with this podcast, because I always want to save it until I have time... but other podcasts get in the way – lesser podcasts! This episode is on crypto currencies. #DigiHuman https://t.co/j5UrLgO2gS
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 28, 2020

— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 28, 2020
#JustListened Reasons to be Cheerful. Catching up on two days ago, so #recentlylistened. Ed and Geoff discuss coronavirus bailouts. As they say, now is the moment of greatest leverage for governments, and the time to build in progressive measures. https://t.co/Ad70rkGNSE
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) April 30, 2020
#JustListened The Guardian’s Politics Weekly. Plenty on COVID-19, the PM’s health and baby, but also an interview with the Shadow Home Secretary that almost made it feel like politics as normal. https://t.co/4JTOW037YS
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) May 1, 2020
#JustListened Adam Buxton is back. I’m behind already, but I’ll catch up. https://t.co/nwjnQ8nKsr

#JustListened Connected. This is my favourite Apple podcast. @imyke and @viticci get to be impish. @ismh clearly feels he has to be the father figure, but he seems pretty relaxed about it. I’m now a https://t.co/b3Iwt25LWc member; might get some merch. https://t.co/9AxPDXnqIa
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) May 1, 2020

#JustListened The Wyf Who. A special episode on Dr June Almeida. She played such a vital role in the discovery of the corona class of viruses, and a whole lot more besides. Special mention in this podcast for Prof. Hugh Pennington, for raising her profile. https://t.co/of2BXmKUry
— David Jarman (@dsrjarman) May 3, 2020
#JustListened Universal Basic Income: Alaska Style. This is from BBC World Service. I’m sympathetic to arguments for a UBI, mostly because @JamieACooke supports it. Some interesting point here from Alaska, but then again is what they’re doing really UBI? https://t.co/iIFn3iL8SN
