Hello.

Bench work

Bench work

I’ve been renovating a bench. Bought just before we moved house, it sat outside for a while, then got pulled apart. The wood went to make a little hotel for bugs and beetles. And for the cast iron bench ends… they sat outside for another 18 months or so, suffering the Edinburgh autumn, winter, spring and summer. Stripping the old nuts and bolts out took a while, filing them down and drilling them through. This wasn’t unsatisfying though. Neither was the spray painting, in a lovely racing green.

The slats went on easily enough, at least when you’ve just the one pair of hands. A bit of to and fro, a little tightening and loosening, and we have a bench. The end supports went on fine too, screwed in place into the wood itself. The central metal strap is all that remains to be done, but as that’s going to involve drilling through the strap and cutting it down to length I’m saving it for a sunny day.
